The second of the two Tanforan Cottages, originally the larger, of two storeys by 1866; it is on a map of 1859 beside its older neighbour at 214, and like it is built of local redwood.

By 1878 the two cottages were numbered 206 and 210 Dolores; they were later renumbered 214 and 220.

The florist James Boland lived here from 1896 with his wife Mary Tanforan, one of the thirteen children of Toribio Tanforan, whose Mission ranching family gave the cottages their name; Boland is thought to have planted the garden's redwoods, Norfolk Island pines, palm and bay trees. Both cottages then passed down among the Tanforan sisters.

The two cottages were sold separately in 1952, after title, unrecorded since the 1906 destruction of records, was established under the McEnerney Act.

October 3, 1974
The lot at the southwest corner of 15th and Dolores had 38.7 feet of frontage on Dolores and ran 182 feet along Alert Alley to the south, zoned R-4. The cottage was a small one-storey redwood frame house with a false front, shallow porch carried on four square columns, slightly pitched roof and cellar, in a simplified Greek Revival style. 220 Dolores, of tongue-and-groove construction with two later additions, kept its original carriage house at the rear; its garden held two redwoods, Norfolk Island pines, large fuchsias, a palm and several bay trees.

October 10, 1974
The City Planning Commission unanimously designated the Tanforan Cottage at 220 Dolores Street a landmark (Resolution 7253), over the owner's objection; its twin next door had been designated the previous week, and the Landmarks Board described the pair as the two oldest extant buildings in the Mission District.

Listed in the Junior League of San Francisco's Here Today survey of 1968. One of the Tanforan Cottages, San Francisco City Landmark No. 68, and among the oldest residences in the city; it stood on the edge the 1906 fire reached and stopped at.

Tanforan Cottage #2
Listed as Tanforan Cottage #2 among the properties in the survey area listed in or formally determined eligible for the National Register and the California Register. With the Mission Dolores chapel and cemetery, the Tanforan Cottages of the 1850s are the oldest buildings in the neighbourhood to survive the 1906 earthquake and fire.
