1. 1906

   The firehouse that stood here was destroyed in the earthquake and fire; the company worked from a temporary two-storey wooden building on the site until the present station was finished.

   Completed in 1917 to designs by the city architect John Reid Jr. — a San Franciscan trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and one of Mayor Rolph's Board of Consulting Architects for the Civic Center: a two-storey Beaux-Arts firehouse of brick, terra cotta and tile, engines below and firemen above, with double doors between pilasters with composite capitals, a terra-cotta belt cornice with a Greek-key moulding and dentils, and a pitched red tile roof on carved rafters. It was a firehouse until 1980.
