Southern Police Station

1. 1907

   A wood-frame Mission Revival style police station stood on the site.

2. 1925

   Replaced by the Spanish Colonial Revival Southern Police Station, perhaps the finest Spanish Colonial Revival building in the South of Market. It has been found eligible for the National Register, and was put forward for San Francisco Landmark designation.

4. 1935–1941

   One of two police stations the Works Progress Administration rehabilitated to bring up to the police department's requirements. It survives.

5. 1936

   Works Progress Administration renovations to the station were completed — one of only two WPA projects in the Central SoMa area.

6. 1970s

   Portions of the ornamental wings were removed before the 1970s, and the building was eventually converted into a senior centre.

7. 1973

   The Salvation Army's Bridgeway House operated here, in the former police station.

8. June 14, 1973

   The City Planning Commission unanimously found the sale of the former Southern Police Station to the Salvation Army in conformity with the Master Plan, provided it was merged and developed with the adjoining parcels.
