2. March 8, 1907

   Western Iron Works contracted for iron work on a four-storey and basement brick building, at $17,600.

3. 1908

   Built — the year is the Building Department's — for Andrew A. Louderback, a Forty-niner who had come round the Horn, to designs by Meyer & O'Brien: a four-storey brick apartment hotel of unusual three-part composition, Renaissance-Baroque with an Art Nouveau touch. With the Arlington Hotel it led the rebuilding of the Tenderloin after the 1906 fire.

4. 1908

   The first Rotary Club outside Chicago was founded here: Manuel Muñoz of the Sperry & Hutchinson Company, a member of the Chicago club, stayed at the Cadillac on business and with a local attorney he met there established the San Francisco Rotary.

5. 1924

   The Taussig and Ryan Gymnasium opened in the hotel's former dining room at 312 Leavenworth. Sold in 1942 to Billy Newman and a partner, it became Newman's Gym, reputedly the oldest professional boxing gym in the country, where Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Max Baer, Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, George Foreman and many others trained.

6. 1960

   Cassius Clay worked out at Newman's Gym on his way to the amateur light-heavyweight title and a place on the U.S. Olympic team.

7. March 1966

   The Redevelopment Agency photographed the property, then the Hotel Cadillac.

8. 1977

   The Cadillac Hotel was rehabilitated in 1977 into the first single-room-occupancy complex owned by a nonprofit in California; its rehabilitators went on to secure the building's landmark designation.
