101–121 Taylor Street

1. 1907

   Built as the Hotel Hyland, stores and rooming house with 115 rooms and 50 baths, to the design of the architect A.M. Edelman. Four storeys over a basement, brick structure, three-part vertical composition, Renaissance/Baroque ornamentation.

2. 1962

   Gene Compton's Cafeteria, a brightly lit, inexpensive, 24-hour restaurant belonging to a local chain, was a popular gathering place for transgender women, young male hustlers and others who lived and worked in the Tenderloin, and one of the few places transgender women could socialize safely.

3. 1966

   Gene Compton's Cafeteria, part of a local chain, occupied this corner of Turk and Taylor; in August 1966 transgender women and young men fought back against police here over several nights, an act of resistance that preceded the Stonewall riots by three years and led to lasting institutional change in the city.

4. July 1966

   A few dozen young members of Vanguard, the Tenderloin gay youth group, picketed in front of Compton's against physical and verbal abuse by its management and the Pinkerton special officers posted there; local ABC television covered the picket.

5. August 1966

   When police tried to remove transgender women from the cafeteria, patrons fought back instead of submitting to arrest, throwing crockery, overturning tables and breaking the plate-glass windows; a crowd filled the Turk and Taylor intersection, and by the end of the night a police car had been wrecked and the corner newsstand set on fire.

6. August 1966

   The night after the riot a picket line with placards formed at Compton's, and the windows were broken again.

7. 1972

   Compton's Cafeteria, which had begun closing at midnight after the riot and lost custom, shut down and was replaced by a pornography shop.
