Built by the neighbourhood's Protestants as the South San Francisco Methodist Episcopal Church. The Presbyterians later bought it — it is the “neat edifice in which the Presbyterians worship” of an 1888 Morning Call account of the district — and it has been owned by several denominations since. It stands with minimal alterations, as Pearlgate Tabernacle Church.

The assessor dates the building 1900; the 2010 survey dates it 1871. Most pre-1906 buildings in the district carry a default assessor date of 1900, because the city's building records were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.
