The block held a Japanese nursery of two greenhouses, bunkhouses, a tankhouse, stables and a large shed, run on land rented from the Spring Valley Water Company by Y. Fujioka, proprietor of The Fuji Florist Shop and the largest Japanese florist then working in San Francisco. It was watered from Sans Souci Creek.

Refugees from the earthquake put up tents and wooden shanties on the vacant parcel, at the foot of Clinton Mound.

August 12, 1943
The nation's first municipal farmers' market opened on the 72,000 square-foot lot, organised by John G. Bruncato of the San Francisco Victory Garden Council to connect Bay Area farmers with city buyers after wartime disrupted produce distribution. Over a thousand people came the first day; within three days managers estimated 50,000 residents had bought from the 100 farmers selling there. The market moved to Alemany Boulevard in the late 1940s.

Safeway opened here, originally in the Late Moderne style; the statement calls it one of the neighborhood's most important landmarks despite sitting just outside the survey area, and notes it has been incrementally remodelled and greatly expanded since.
