1954
The Daphne Funeral Home, since demolished, was designed and built between 1950 and 1954: a two-storey cantilevered mortuary of simple geometric volumes on a roughly cruciform plan, linked by a canopy to a single-storey chapel whose roof was made of planes set at different heights under broad overhangs, with ramps for circulation and fixed, ribbon and plate glass throughout. The commission first went to Frank Lloyd Wright; his contract was ended and the work passed to A. Quincy Jones, the only mortuary Jones built. Geraldine Knight Scott laid out the grounds with native and exotic planting and Japanese-influenced features — small stone shrines, private garden spaces, a rock garden — keeping the rock outcrop at the southern edge.

1967
A fire destroyed more than half the administration building of the funeral home that then stood here, taking most of the windows and the neon sign. Owen Jones drew the rebuilding, overseen by A. Quincy Jones: the smooth redwood siding gave way to redwood plywood battened with rough-sawn two-by-twos, the ribbon windows on the south side went, the neon was never replaced, redwood walls inside became plasterboard, damaged terrazzo was patched with concrete and the roof overhang was cut back. Plans for a second chapel and a greenhouse were abandoned.
