451 Jackson Street

1. 1866

   Probably built in 1866 (sometimes dated 1861) as the office and warehouse of A. P. Hotaling, pioneer liquor merchant, whose trade in liquor, land and goods reached from Alaska and Kamchatka to the South Seas; it also held much of his collection of books and paintings.

   Survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, and became the subject of a popular jingle of the day.

3. 1943

   Having served the Hotaling firm as a bonded liquor warehouse for more than fifty years, it passed in 1943 to printing and lithography.

5. 1951

   Restored after two decades of decline by new owners who bought it in 1951, as Jackson Street was reborn as a centre for decorators, designers and architects — the 'Jackson Square idea'.

   The City Planning Commission approved designating the Hotaling Building a city landmark, with the owner's concurrence.
