Klockars Blacksmith and Metal Works

1. 1912

   Klockars Blacksmith and Metal Works was built, and was later designated a city landmark.

   Built.

3. 1938

   The shop, built about 1912 by the toolmaker F. V. Wilbert, whose sign is still on the east wall, passed to the Klockars blacksmith business, which forged canning tongs for canneries across the country, pins for a Willamette River bridge and elevator brackets for Shasta Dam; it narrowly escaped a freeway on-ramp.

4. 1985

   A designated city landmark protected under Article 10 of the Planning Code — the only structure in the Rincon Hill plan area with that protection — the plainly built wood-frame shop survived as one of the last early-20th-century smithies South of Market.

2 expired permits are omitted. The assessor's roll gives 1913; the city's statement on Progressive Era and early revival styles gives 1911. A 1986 environmental review for 300 Beale Street dates this building 1912 and gives its address as 443 Folsom Street; a 1991 review for 300 Howard Street gives the Edwin Klockars Blacksmith Shop, City Landmark No. 149, as 449 Folsom Street.
