1. 1928

   The Del Monte Building was built — an office building of about 109 feet, which the Del Monte Corporation held until 1973.

2. 1976

   Continental Development Corporation, which had bought the building from Del Monte in 1973, put it through major restoration and renovation work in 1976 and 1977 rather than demolish it — a decision the company's own environmental report describes as the reason it acquired the property.

The Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989 damaged the building badly enough that it stood vacant for about ten years. A retrofit completed in early 2001 combined steel braced frames with concrete shear walls and took the Structural Engineers Association of California's Excellence in Structural Engineering Award. Gordon Huether's Urban Grit — twelve panels of sandblasted kiln-fused glass, each three feet by four, hung in a 50-foot steel railing across the entrance — was unveiled that July, worked up from his own photographs of cracked pavement and peeling paint.
