1. May 6, 1971

   The site, the whole Market Street frontage from Fremont to First Street running 275 feet down Fremont, held retail stores and the Sheldon Building at First and Market. On discretionary review, the City Planning Commission approved, with three conditions, the building permit for the Metropolitan Life Building, a 38-storey, 524-foot office tower.

   The tower opened to tenants as One Metropolitan Plaza, with about 1,100,000 gross square feet of office space — the largest of the seven office buildings put up between Market and Battery Streets since 1959.
