101 California Street

1. 1974

   The 49,000-square-foot building that stood here was demolished after a destructive fire. Its offices had been occupied by Bechtel and Pacific Gas and Electric, who had moved out earlier.

A gunman entered the 34th-floor offices of the law firm Pettit & Martin and killed eight people and wounded six before killing himself. The killings were among the events that carried the federal Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 to passage.
