1. November 1910

   Reuben L. (Rube) Goldberg, then a young cartoonist working in New York, bought the empty corner lot, one of many vacant lots left after 1906.

2. 1911

   The steel-frame, stucco-clad R. L. Goldberg Building was completed, with the owner's name cut into the cornice, three shops at street level, and two large flats upstairs: 194 for Rube Goldberg and 186 for his widowed father.

3. August 15, 1911

   A $1,550 contract was filed with Smyth Bros. for the exterior and interior plaster and cement work on the two-storey-and-basement Class C building; construction was well along by summer 1911.

4. 1912

   Bray & O'Connor Liquors ran a saloon in the corner shop at Oak Street; it later became M. F. Bray Liquors.

5. 1929

   Bien, a Danish and Norwegian newspaper, had its office in the middle shop; it was still listed there in 1932.

6. 1953

   Best Cleaners & Tailors occupied the north shop, and was still listed there in 1982.

7. 1958

   A permit was sought to hang an exterior sign for a coin-operated laundry, the first recorded permit for the building. The corner shop became The Whirlomat Laundry by 1960 and later the Do It Yourself Laundry.

8. May 19, 1972

   After Rube Goldberg's death in 1970, a probate decree of final distribution passed the building to his heirs, ending his 61-year ownership.

9. 1977

   The building was repaired after a car crashed into it.
