    Two houses standing on the Oak Street lots were demolished to make way for the convent.

    The Dominican Convent was built for the sisters who taught at the parish school, on two Oak Street lots the parish had bought in 1927: a two-storey building of stuccoed reinforced concrete by John J. Foley, with a chapel wing of painted art-glass windows and a tiled roof garden.

    The Black Panther Party's free breakfast programme for children ran out of the basement of Sacred Heart Church, part of a parish complex that is a designated city landmark.
