1150 16th Street

1. 1910

   A one-storey reinforced-concrete commercial building was built for the Standard Oil Company as a garage and repair shop; its footprint went unchanged through most of the twentieth century.

2. 1914

   The Standard Oil Company — later Chevron — ran a bulk fuel terminal across this block from about 1914 to about 1974. The concrete pads of two of its fuel tanks, carried on timber piles, remain buried five to six feet below ground.

3. 1974

   The bulk fuel facility was dismantled and the property divided into five parcels and sold; the 1910 garage had stayed in use as an auxiliary building until the sale.

4. 1974-2004

   Between 1974 and 2004 the building's occupants included the Pacific Telephone Company.

6. 2004

   The building was converted from industrial use to the Axis Cafe restaurant; the work took out the vehicular bays, the original windows and the original pedestrian entrance.

7. June 15, 2011

   The Historic Preservation Commission unanimously adopted a 6Z survey rating for the building, finding it ineligible for the National Register, the California Register and the local register.
