Mission Bay

The flat ground between Division Street and Mariposa, east of Potrero Avenue and west of the freeway. Much of it was under water or under the Mission Bay watershed into the 19th century, and most of it was railroad land by the time of the 1906 earthquake; the wholesale and manufacturing district that followed — the “New Wholesale District” — filled the blocks with brick warehouses. The showrooms that took those warehouses over from the early 1970s gave the eastern half its present name, Showplace Square, and Henry Adams Street its own. Coverage begins with the buildings named in the city’s Showplace Square / Northeast Mission Historic Resource Survey, adopted in 2011.
