  2. July 2, 1934

During the 1934 Waterfront Strike, the Garcia & Maggini Warehouse was rented by strikebreakers as the dummy drayage company Atlas Drayage; on July 2-3, 1934, trucks loaded with coffee were driven here from Pier 38 under police protection, triggering a clash between strikers and police that spread west along Townsend Street.

South of Market Area Historic Context Statement, adopted 2011
  3. July 3, 1934

The Industrial Association — the city's leading banks, shippers and manufacturers — tried to break the three-month waterfront strike by "opening the port": heavily guarded trucks of a dummy firm, Atlas Drayage, carried token cargoes two blocks from Pier 38 to space rented in this warehouse. Several thousand strikers and sympathisers tried to stop them; six hundred police and several fire engines forced a path and defended the building, and four hours of fighting around it put at least 25 people in hospital.
