   The Atherton House on the north side of California Street between Gough and Octavia had been selected as a potential landmark by the Landmarks Advisory Board.

   The City Planning Commission's 3-3 tie vote disapproved landmark designation of the Atherton House at 1990 California Street (Resolution 7262), against the Landmarks Board's recommendation; the house, a large and almost unaltered Queen Anne, was where the Junior League of San Francisco was founded.

   By 9 January 1975, the Board of Supervisors had voted 10-0 to override the City Planning Commission and designate the Atherton House a city landmark.

   The Atherton House, a landmark since 19 February 1975, stood vacant: a three-storey, twelve-unit rooming house with one off-street parking space on a 68-by-137-foot corner lot.

    After the Board of Permit Appeals sent the case back to it, the City Planning Commission unanimously refused to let Montage, Ltd. use the Atherton House as a private dining club for patrons of the arts, citing parking and the residential neighbourhood (Resolution 7472).
