    The Lane Medical Library, for Stanford University's medical department, was practically complete: a fireproof building 60 by 100 ft, with metal stacks for 80,000 volumes and room for 30,000 more, faced in plastered stone on classical lines and built as far as possible of California materials.

    After years out of use as a library, the building was rededicated as the Medical Sciences Library. It had been built in 1912 with the bequest of Dr. Levi Cooper Lane for a "monumental building" to hold a medical library around his own collection.
