Opened as Alexander Pantages' third and last San Francisco theatre, fifth of Market Street's six great movie palaces, designed in a Spanish Gothic manner by the Seattle theatre architect B. Marcus Priteca, who designed every Pantages house; until the Hollywood Pantages it was the largest of the circuit's theatres.

When Pantages broke up his circuit in 1929, RKO took the theatre and gave it the name of its recently closed O'Farrell Street Orpheum.

1953
Entirely renovated to show Cinerama, with much of the original decoration draped or painted over; after the Cinerama contract ended in the mid-1960s it showed ordinary films for a while and then closed, save for occasional events.

The City Planning Commission unanimously approved designating the Orpheum Theater a city landmark, on the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board's recommendation (Resolution 7662).

Orpheum Theatre was recorded as an unreinforced-masonry building of merit in the city's seismic-safety survey, which dated it to 1926.
