Haas Candy Factory

1. 1907

   Built as the five-storey Haas Candy Factory, one of the buildings in the eligible Mint-Mission Historic District already carrying an Article 11 Category I or II rating.

   George Haas & Sons made its candies, chocolates and ice cream here for 21 years from the building's completion, supplying the firm's chain of shops — among them its main store in the Phelan Building on Market Street and a counter in the Palace Hotel lobby — before moving to a larger factory a few blocks away.

4. October 17, 1989

   The Loma Prieta earthquake badly damaged the two rear bays of the top two floors on the Stevenson Street side. They were rebuilt in concrete block, and steel cross-braces were added just inside the north wall.
