St. Patrick's Church

1. 1869

   The cornerstone was laid for the parish's second church, the Gothic brick building finished in 1872. It replaced a wooden church on Market Street between Second and Third, which was moved to Eddy and Divisadero Streets.

2. 1872

   The new St. Patrick's church was dedicated, serving a predominantly Irish immigrant population of about 30,000 and intended as the Irish national church of San Francisco and the West Coast. The parish had been established in 1851 in a rented hall at 4th and Jessie streets, and its lot on the north side of Mission Street was bought after the Civil War.

3. 1900

   Built.

4. 1906

   The steeple, which had stood 200 feet above the street, was lost with the rest of the church in the earthquake and fire. The rebuilt church went up in the same Gothic Revival style but without it.

5. April 18, 1906

   Heavily damaged in the earthquake and fire; the church was reconstructed.

6. 1939

   The church rectory adjoining it was constructed.

7. 1960s

   Saint Patrick's Church, whose congregation became increasingly Filipino from the 1960s. It is one of the two Catholic parishes that anchored the Filipino community south of Market, and the annual Feast of Santo Niño de Cebu was celebrated here from the 1970s.

8. 1965

   Yerba Buena Center redevelopment plans showed only 15 percent of the roughly 400 buildings in the project area being retained, with the central blocks razed save for St. Patrick's Church.
