   The plaza in front of the Federal Building was the site of an Armed Forces Day protest in May 1966 against the exclusion and dishonourable discharge of homosexuals from military service - with over forty demonstrators and several hundred onlookers, the largest gay rights demonstration in San Francisco to that point.
