Phelan Building

1. before 1906

   The first Phelan Building on this site, a six-storey mansard-roofed flatiron built by the pioneer banker James Phelan, was destroyed in the fire; his son James D. Phelan — mayor, later a U.S. senator and a backer of the graft prosecutions — replaced it with the present building, which the Call hailed in 1907 as "already a landmark".
