Built as the Burdette Building.

Contemporary newspaper accounts reported that every surrounding building was gutted but the small brick building came through the fire with its windows intact and its interior untouched, shielded in part by the eleven-story Atlas Building next door. A twelve-story building had originally been planned for the site; only two storeys were built, on a foundation strong enough for the larger scheme.
