Transbay Terminal

1. 1939

   Built as the Transbay Terminal to designs by Timothy Pflueger and Arthur Brown Jr., linked to the new Bay Bridge by a looping concrete viaduct that carried Key System trains into downtown. It was planned for 35 million passengers a year and handled 26 million at its wartime peak.

2. 1939

   The Transbay Transit Terminal, with an 870-foot passenger platform, opened in 1939 as the terminal for trains crossing the Bay Bridge and replaced the Ferry Building as the city's primary gateway; rated "B" by Heritage.

3. 1959

   Turned into a regional bus depot, after the lower deck of the Bay Bridge was given over to cars in 1958 and the Key System dismantled.

4. March 4, 1999

   A 1,500-gallon diesel underground storage tank was removed from the terminal site; the Department of Public Health closed the case administratively on June 21.
