  1. 1850s

Through the second half of the nineteenth century the site held commercial buildings occupied at various times by a soap company, liquor-rectifying operations, a tobacco company and salt companies.

  2. 1852

The site was filled in 1851–52 in the filling of Yerba Buena Cove — ten to twenty feet of fill over the cove floor, dune sand, refuse and storeship remains among it — and the first buildings, typically one- and two-storey commercial structures, were probably put up on it in 1852 after the fire of May 1851.

  3. 1856

Part of this site was the ground of Fort Gunnybags, the Vigilance Committee's 1856 stronghold; a plaque marks the spot. The two brick buildings that stood over it came down for the office building of 2000.

  4. 1906

Every building on the site was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire; the pair of brick commercial buildings that replaced them were part of the post-earthquake rebuilding.

  5. 1909

A two-storey brick commercial building of the immediate post-1906 rebuilding, put up in 1909 by the P. J. Walker Construction Company; no architect is recorded on its plans. It was cleared for the office building of 2000.

  6. 1913

A two-storey brick commercial building of 1913, designed by H. K. Lovell and built by the P. J. Walker Construction Company. It was cleared for the office building of 2000.

  7. 1929

By 1929 a small service station stood on the Sacramento and Front corner of the site — ground that was still a vacant building lot in 1995.

  8. 1979

Both buildings on the site were rated "C" — contextual importance — in the Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage survey published in 1979 as Splendid Survivors; the Planning Department's 1976 citywide survey had not rated them.

  10. 1986

A former owner asked the Planning Department to reconsider the buildings' Category IV ratings because the Front Street facades had been altered and sandblasted; staff declined, finding the work had not lowered the buildings' integrity.

  11. 1989

A high-rise was approved for the empty corner portion of the site; the lot stayed empty, and by 1995 the Planning Department was reviewing an application for an interim two-storey retail structure instead.
