Samuel Brannan put up one of a pair of Montgomery Street buildings on this site in 1853; the building standing here replaced it.

    Brannan buildings

    Samuel Brannan erected buildings at 400 and 420 Montgomery Street out of the profits of real-estate investments; they were then considered ornaments of the city and evidence of confidence in its future.
