700–750 7th Street
Office building
-
1905
Built as the Baker & Hamilton warehouse, a heavy timber-framed brick building that became the model for several later warehouses in the district. Designed by Sutton & Weeks.
-
1905
Built over 1904 and 1905 for the Pacific Hardware and Steel Company, a firm Mark Hopkins and Collis P. Huntington had founded in Sacramento: a three-storey warehouse, office and showroom 275 by 264 feet, with a light well at its centre, a railway spur along Townsend Street and a covered loading dock on King. It was the first building on this filled Mission Bay land.
-
April 1906
The fire after the earthquake came down Townsend Street, turned north and burned only the east side of Seventh Street, sparing the building while it destroyed many of the warehouses around it. It also came through the 1989 earthquake largely undamaged.
-
1918
Baker & Hamilton moved into larger quarters here in 1918; the building, now Baker Hamilton Square, carries City Landmark No. 193.
-
1918
The merger of Pacific Hardware & Steel with Baker & Hamilton, the Gold Rush hardware and farm-implement firm, made this the offices and warehouse of the combined Baker, Hamilton & Pacific Company. It worked here until 1981, and its rooftop sign reading BAKER HAMILTON, SINCE 1849 is still in place.
-
February 1989
Designated San Francisco Landmark No. 193, as an outstanding surviving example of the warehouses that were common here before 1906.
