1. 1906

   Built by the Western Pacific Railway as one of the corrugated steel structures the railroads put up cheaply for new tenants after the earthquake; designed by the company's chief engineer V. G. Bogue and built by Thomas H. Day & Sons. Long the home of the Union Machine Shop, and the only one of these buildings known to survive in the survey area. 2. 1970s

   The city bought this building in the late 1960s for its Neighborhood Arts Program. It became the SoMa Cultural Center, home to a mural resource centre, a costume bank and technical services for artists, and was renamed SOMArts by the 1990s.
