October 17, 1989
Two buildings on this block that the Van Ness Avenue Plan had named as significant, 1623 and 1629 Pine Street, were damaged in the Loma Prieta earthquake. Two more on the block were contributory buildings under the same plan.

All six buildings on the block bounded by Van Ness Avenue, Pine, Franklin and Austin Streets — among them a 45-room hotel and a filling station — were to be cleared for a life-care tower of nine to thirteen storeys.
