900 Innes Avenue

1. 1868

   Johnson J. Dircks, born in the Netherlands, was the first known boat builder to move to Hunters Point, establishing a yard at the corner of 5th (Evans) Avenue and L (Lane) Street. He moved all of his operations to a site next to William Stone's on 9th (Innes) Avenue in 1876.

2. circa 1875

   The Dircks Residence was built — one of three structures surviving from the earliest era of wooden boat building at India Basin.

3. 1875

   Johnson J. Dircks, the first shipwright to move to India Basin, bought the lot in the San Francisco Homestead & Railroad Association tract in September 1875 for $900, at the age of 51, and built this two-storey L-plan house beside his new yard, where over the next decade he built the scow schooners Master Mariner, Mary Frances, Hercules, Wavelet, Paul & Willie, Annie Eliza and Fidelity.

4. 1893

   Dircks sold his yard and marine ways to Henry P. "Pop" Anderson, whose family ran it as a shipwright and repair yard — Anderson & Larsen, then Anderson & Siemer, and finally Anderson & Cristofani — for almost a century; the ship carpenter Carl J. Jorgenson moved into the cottage.

5. 1900

   Built by Johnson J. Dircks.

6. 1908–1923

   The shipwright Fred Siemer Jr. lived here with his family; shipwrights and boat builders kept the cottage until the yard's decline.

7. 1961

   Anderson & Cristofani bought the cottage and converted it into an office for their shipyard, which used it until 1997.

8. 1965–1968

   The Anderson & Cristofani yard refurbished the historic scow schooner Alma.

1 expired permit is omitted. The assessor dates the building 1900; the 2010 survey dates it about 1875. Most pre-1906 buildings in the district carry a default assessor date of 1900, because the city's building records were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire. The Bayview Hunters Point Area B context statement calls this building City Landmark No. 260, the Dircks Residence; DataSF's landmark list and the designation report give No. 250, the Shipwright's Cottage (No. 260 is the Tobin House). The building is dated 1875 in its landmark designation; the assessor's roll gives 1900. The India Basin context statement says Anderson & Cristofani bought the cottage in 1961 and used it as an office until 1997; the landmark designation report says it was part of the Anderson & Cristofani property from 1926 until it was sold in 1986, and that the firm advertised until 1988.
