Johnson J. Dircks, born in the Netherlands, was the first known boat builder to move to Hunters Point, establishing a yard at the corner of 5th (Evans) Avenue and L (Lane) Street. He moved all of his operations to a site next to William Stone's on 9th (Innes) Avenue in 1876.

The Dircks Residence was built — one of three structures surviving from the earliest era of wooden boat building at India Basin.

Anderson & Cristofani bought the cottage and converted it into an office for their shipyard, which used it until 1997.

The assessor dates the building 1900; the 2010 survey dates it about 1875. Most pre-1906 buildings in the district carry a default assessor date of 1900, because the city's building records were destroyed in the 1906 earthquake and fire.
