William Stone moved his boat yard from Potrero Point to 9th (Innes) Avenue near G (Griffith) Street, following Johnson J. Dircks to the shallow northern shoreline of the Hunters Point peninsula, where immigrant shipwrights built shallow-draft bay scows for over fifty years. The yards were family-run and often home-based, the builders' dwellings standing among the boat lofts and storage sheds, and the craft passed from father to son for three generations.

Recorded as the Stone Residence: a two-story L-plan gable-roofed dwelling clad in redwood drop siding, its paired double-hung windows under projecting cornice mouldings with applied pilasters and foliate brackets, and an elaborate cornice of paired brackets and a broken entablature. The form lists a frame outbuilding at the rear of the lot, the concrete retaining wall and a eucalyptus grove as related features. The survey dates the house to the early-to-mid 1870s on its Italianate detailing and on the shipwright's appearance at the address in city directories from 1873, matching the opening of his boat yard about 1872.
