The Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage rated the California Pacific Building "B" in the 1979 downtown survey it published as Splendid Survivors — the second of its four grades, for buildings it judged individually important for their architecture, their history and their setting. The Department of City Planning's 1976 Architectural Inventory rated it "2" on a scale running from 0 to 5. Buildings rated A or B by the Foundation, or 3 or above by the city survey, went onto the List of Architecturally and/or Historically Significant Buildings in the Downtown, adopted by the City Planning Commission on 29 May 1980 in Resolution No. 8600.

The California Pacific Building was named as one of six buildings in the Hallidie Building Block - Retail Historic District, which the Landmarks Preservation Advisory Board recommended to the City Planning Commission for designation as a city historic district. The district was centred on the Hallidie Building at 130 Sutter Street and covered that side of the block; it also lay within the larger Retail-Shopping Historic District that Heritage had identified as eligible for the National Register.

The twelve-storey California Pacific Building was not pulled down with the rest of the block: the 101 Montgomery Street project restored its exterior and took its interior into the new tower as office space, changing the old floor levels to match the new ones. The Foundation for San Francisco's Architectural Heritage had rated it "B" and the city's 1976 survey "2".
