560 Mission Street

  Installed 2000. George Rickey (1907-2002), an American kinetic sculptor, built the work from two circles that remain in contact and move only by wind and gravity, without motors. Sources differ on the work's exact title: one names it 'Annular Eclipse V', while the George Rickey Foundation's public collection page names the 560 Mission Street work 'Annular Eclipse Sixteen Feet II' (1999-2000).

1. 1907

   The Dalziel Building, an unreinforced masonry building of 1907, stood here until it was taken down after heavy damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake; its western brick wall was left standing as the party wall of the building next door.

2. 1919

   The D. N. & E. Walter Co. Building of 1919, about 65,000 square feet and 85 feet to the parapet, was built of reinforced concrete faced in brick, using drop-panel mushroom-column construction. It was cleared for the office tower of 2002.

3. 1966

   The building immediately west came down in 1966, leaving a gap of nearly 68 feet that has been used as a parking lot since. The gap and the building beside it were cleared for the office tower of 2002.
